| Joe "Satch" Satriani (ur. 15 lipca 1956 w Nowym Jorku) – amerykański gitarzysta-wirtuoz (gitara elektryczna), wokalista oraz kompozytor.
Zaczął grać na gitarze w wieku 14 lat zainspirowany muzyką Jimi Hendriksa, którego śmierć była dla niego olbrzymią motywacją. Właśnie wtedy zaczął bardzo porządnie ćwiczyć. Wcześniej trenował rugby.
Od 1971 roku, czyli już w wieku piętnastu lat, Satriani był nauczycielem gry na gitarze. Jego uczniami byli m.in.: Steve Vai, David Bryson (Counting Crows), Kirk Hammett (Metallica), Larry LaLonde (Primus), Charlie Hunter oraz wielu innych. W następnych latach grał ze znakomitymi muzykami jazzowymi, co znacznie wpłynęło na jego styl. Byli to m.in. Lennie Tristano i Billy Bauer.
W latach '80 Joe Satriani grał koncerty z Mickiem Jaggerem oraz brał udział w wielu sesjach nagraniowych różnych zespołów. W latach '90 na kilka miesięcy zastąpił na koncertach gitarzystę Deep Purple – Ritchiego Blackmore'a.
Pierwszy jego solowy album został wydany w 1986 roku i nosił tytuł Not of This Earth. Za następne płyty – Surfing With the Alien, Dreaming #11, Flying In A Blue Dream, The Extremist – artysta był nominowany do nagrody Grammy.
W 1996, Satriani stworzył formację G3. Oprócz niego udział w projekcie brali Steve Vai, Adrian Legg, Paul Gilbert, Eric Johnson, Yngwie Malmsteen, John Petrucci, Kenny Wayne Shepherd i Robert Fripp. Grupa zyskuje popularność bardzo udanymi trasami koncertowymi w Stanach Zjednoczonych i Europie.
Styl gry Joe cechuje doskonała znajomość wszystkich technik gry, w szczególności zaś legato i tappingu. Na szczególną uwagę zasługuje stosowana przez niego w niektórych utworach technika tappingu "pianistycznego", gdzie palce obu rąk uderzają w struny bezpośrednio na gryfie (kostka staje się zbędna), co pozwala na uzyskanie efektów nieosiągalnych przy tradycyjnej grze. Satriani jest autorem licznych "etiud" wykorzystujących tę technikę ("Midnight" z płyty Surfing With the Alien, "Day At The Beach" z Flying In A Blue Dream). Potrafi także grać tappingowe flażolety. Joe znakomicie operuje systemem wibrato ("wajchą") a także, co najważniejsze, w przeciwieństwie do wielu innych wirtuozów nie ogranicza się do popisów technicznych, ale tworzy piękne, rozbudowane, pomysłowe kompozycje pełne emocji. Jest jednym z najlepszych gitarzystów świata.
Satriani jest jednym z najbardziej innowacyjnych i inspirujących gitarzystów naszych czasów. Świadczy o tym wielka liczba muzyków przyznających się do fascynacji jego twórczością. |

Guitar boss Joe Satriani's ninth album reflects the terrain he's traveled more than it points to an unexplored one -- and yes, that does prove to be a good thing. Satriani has explored many directions over eight previous albums, mashing together rock, blues, jazz, and pure technical proficiency in a dizzying blend that bears his unique signature. Is There Love in Space? recalls two distinct projects from his catalog, the groundbreaking Surfing With the Alien and the exotic Strange Beautiful Music. From the former is the driven, balls-out, tough blues-and-hard rock riffs and hooks, while from the latter are involved and sometimes intricate melodies and Eastern-tinged modes -- though none of the electronica. Satriani's sense of writing catchy turnarounds and hooks is ubiquitous here, and though he uses keyboards, they are never employed as more than devices to further along the framework of a particular tune. Even the vocal cuts here work well, "Lifestyle" with its roosty rock & roll vocal, boogie on methamphetamine whir, and bombastic power chords is a great choice for a single, as is the stomping, metallic "Hands in the Air," which updates Steppenwolf's "Born to Be Wild" riff in extremis. The mid-tempo tunes, such as the wah-wah-phased title track and the shimmering "If I Could Fly," are nice changes of pace too. The funky future blues of "I Like the Rain" features a slightly annoying vocal, but in its ZZ Top-fueled desert boogie, it hardly matters. The masterpiece on the set is "Searching," however. It's slow- to mid-tempo stride and minor key cadence pushed to the limit by the razor-wired and feedback aesthetic of its ten-minute sprawling excess. While guitar hero records are anything but cool in the new century, this guitar hero offers one cool little record.
